پونی شتلند به دلیل کوچکی اندازه‌اش به عنوان اسبچه‌ای برای کودکان بسیار محبوبیت دارد اما باید توجه داشت که این نوع از پونی‌ها غالبا بسیار سرکش بوده و کنترل کردنشان سخت می‌باشد. همچنین از پونی‌های شتلند در قرن نوزدهم به عنوان اسب بارکش استفاده می‌شده است.
پونی هایلند (به انگلیسی: Highland pony) از پونی‌های بومی اسکاتلند و یکی از بزرگترین نژادهای پونی جزایر بریتانیا است که در کوهستان‌ها و خلنگزارهای این کشور زندگی می‌کند. ارتفاع این پونی بین ۱۳۲ تا ۱۴۸ سانتی‌متر است.
درگذشته اسکاتلندی‌ها از پونی هایلند برای کشیدن گاری استفاده می‌کردند اما امروزه از آن برای سوارکاری و ارابه‌رانی استفاده می‌شود.

The Shetland pony is a breed of pony originating in the Shetland Isles. Shetlands range in size from a minimum height of approximately 28 inches to an official maximum height of 42 inches (10.2 hands, 107 cm) at the withers. (11.2 hands for American Shetlands) Shetland ponies have heavy coats, short legs and are considered quite intelligent. They are a very strong breed of pony, used for riding, driving, and pack purposes
The Highland Pony is a native Scottish pony, and is one of the largest of the mountain and moorland pony breeds of the British Isles. Its pedigree dates back to the 1880s. It was once a workhorse in the Scottish mainland and islands, but today is used for driving, trekking and general riding.
